Nat and I have been good friends for over 18 years. Nat is a deeply spiritual man, a barber, a photographer, and visual artist. He is affectionately called “The Plug” because of the way he connects people to each other and builds meaningful relationships within our community.
This painting weaves together significant elements of his life, centering around his barbershop. The setting is intimate, featuring personal items like his prayer book. In his hands, he holds his first pair of clippers, symbolizing the beginning of his journey in barbering. Alongside this, his camera ,paints and brushes signify his passion for the visual arts.
Notably, a funeral brochure is present, honoring the legacy of Tootie Montana, the late Mardi Gras king, whose image he painted, underscoring the community's deep cultural ties. Finally, a postcard is positioned behind his head, hinting at his construction work on the Super Dome, further illustrating the diverse facets of his identity and accomplishments. This artwork serves as a tribute to his multifaceted life, connecting personal memories with broader community narratives.
The calendar marks his birthday, and in the small TV, the old lady is watching, I have added a boxing scene, referencing the time he boxed in the Navy. I painted his jacket blue, as this is his favorite color. Nat, who designed clothes in his younger years, has always embraced a stylish approach to his wardrobe. Each aspect reveals layers of his personality and reflects on a life rich with experiences.
